An endoscopic test is performed to provide the doctor with a clear look at the patient’s internal organs. These tests are also used for the diagnosis, prevention, staging, early detection and treatment of cancer. It is extremely difficult for both the patient and the doctor to know if a patient is suffering from organ damage, infection or cancer. This is an ideal test in which the doctor inserts an endoscope with a camera and light and studies the organs. It is a preferred method as no incisions are required to insert the endoscope. The reasons why a patient may have to undergo an endoscopy test are: 1. Check for symptoms When you visit the doctor, he will usually conduct a physical examination and also order for blood tests. The tests help the doctor have a better understanding of the symptoms. Sometimes during the endoscopy test, the doctor might also conduct a biopsy. A biopsy is when the doctor takes a sample of tissue from the patient’s organ. This sample is tested to help the doctor properly diagnose the medical condition or disease the patient may be suffering from. 2. Evaluate severity of digestive condition If a patient is undergoing treatment, the doctor may order routine endoscopy tests to check the severity of the patient’s condition and also check progress. There are a number of conditions that can cause digestive distress to the patient. Doctors would suggest this test in all stages of the treatment which would include studying the symptoms, diagnosing the condition and checking the progress of the treatment. If in some cases the treatment does not work, such a test would help the doctor figure out what went wrong and how to best treat the patient. 3. Preparing for surgery When a surgeon is performing any type of surgery on the patient’s organs, he may require an endoscopy test to be performed. This test would not only give him a clear idea but also keep him prepared during the surgery. The test helps reduce the possibility of complications arising during the surgery. 4. Check for cancer There are endoscopy tests like a colonoscopy which check for cancer in patients who may not be showing symptoms. Such tests help the doctor discover the cancer before it spreads. In the case of a colonoscopy, the doctor would remove the polyps growing in the colon before they turn cancerous. Such a test can also be used in some cases to remove small cancer from the patient’s body. An endoscopy test can be used for several purposes by the doctor. It is for this very reason that a patient must understand the importance of this test.
